Nikon RAW Editing on a Mac

Nikon has written RAW to the same extension since the 1990s: .NEF, from the D1 to the newest Z body, with .NRW covering the advanced Coolpix compacts. Both open in RevelRaw: drag a file in and AI scene detection ranks 40+ presets against the photograph, with the full set of fine-tune controls on top. Everything runs on your Mac; no file ever leaves it. This page collects what's on the site for Nikon shooters.

One extension, a quarter-century of cameras — which means the file inside has changed more than the name suggests. Bit depth, compression schemes and sensor formats all evolved, and the newest variants are the ones to double-check software support for.

Guides for Nikon shooters

Editor comparisons for specific Z bodies and NEF how-to guides are on the way; the format guides above cover any Nikon camera in the meantime.

What to know before your first edit

Two Nikon-specific things surprise people. First, Picture Controls are metadata: the Standard or Vivid profile from the camera menu travels in the NEF as a note, and only Nikon's free NX Studio renders it — every other editor, ours included, starts from the neutral sensor data. Second, the newest compression needs the newest software: recent Z bodies offer High Efficiency RAW alongside Lossless Compressed, and third-party support for it arrived well after the cameras did. Lossless Compressed remains the safe, full-quality default everywhere.

Open a NEF in RevelRaw and it decodes the sensor data on your Mac, classifies the scene, and ranks its 40+ presets so the most relevant looks surface first — then you fine-tune exposure, color, curves and grain, and export as JPEG, PNG, TIFF or HEIF with platform presets for Instagram, print and web.

FAQ

Does RevelRaw open Nikon RAW files?

Yes — NEF from DSLRs and Z bodies, NRW from Coolpix compacts, with every editing control available on them.

Does RevelRaw render Picture Controls?

No — only Nikon's NX Studio does. The profile is metadata; third-party editors start from the neutral sensor data.

Which NEF compression should I use?

Lossless Compressed. High Efficiency RAW on recent Z bodies is smaller, but verify your editor reads it first.

Why won't my NEF open on my Mac?

A just-released body can wait for Apple's RAW support, and High Efficiency files need explicit editor support. Nikon's free NX Studio reads everything meanwhile.

See a Nikon file the fast way. Download RevelRaw, drop a .NEF in, and watch it ranked against 40+ presets in seconds — with one full-quality export on the house. Get it on the Mac App Store (requires macOS 26 or later).
