What Is a NEF File? Nikon's RAW Format, Explained
A NEF file is Nikon Electronic Format — the RAW format Nikon has used since the DSLR era, and still writes on every current body. A NEF is not a finished picture. It holds the unprocessed readings from every photosite on the sensor at the moment you pressed the shutter, along with the camera's metadata and embedded JPEG previews, in one .NEF file. That makes it the digital negative: everything the camera saw, with every decision about the photograph still open.
The format's reach is unusually wide. Every Nikon DSLR writes NEF, and so does every Z-series mirrorless body — decades of cameras, one extension. The lone exception in the lineup is Nikon's advanced Coolpix compacts, which write NRW, a relative of NEF but not the same format. Here's what's inside a NEF, and how to work with it on a Mac.

What's actually inside a NEF file
A camera sensor doesn't record a picture. Each photosite records how much light hit it through a single-color filter — red, green or blue — arranged in a mosaic. A NEF file stores those readings as they came off the sensor:
- The mosaic sensor data. One brightness value per photosite, at 12- or 14-bit precision. No white balance, no sharpening, no Picture Control has been applied yet. Turning this mosaic into a viewable photograph is the job of your RAW editor.
- Metadata. Camera body, lens, exposure settings, autofocus information, and the Picture Control you had dialed in. Editors read this to know how to interpret the data; nothing in it is baked into the pixels.
- Embedded JPEG previews. The camera develops previews with its own processing and tucks them inside the NEF. That's what you see on the camera's screen and in Finder thumbnails — which is why a RAW file can look one way as a thumbnail and another once an editor opens the real data.
Why a NEF looks flat next to the camera's JPEG
Set a Nikon to JPEG and the camera develops the photo before writing it: white balance chosen, contrast and saturation raised, sharpening applied, and your Picture Control — Standard, Vivid, Flat, Monochrome — baked into the pixels. Shoot NEF and that same Picture Control travels along as metadata instead. The recipe is written on the file; none of it has been cooked in.
Picture Controls are Nikon's own recipes, and only Nikon software renders them exactly. The camera applies them to its JPEGs and to the previews embedded in the NEF, and NX Studio, Nikon's free desktop app, reads the tag and matches the camera's render. Third-party editors don't have the recipe. Lightroom, Capture One and RevelRaw each open the sensor data with their own starting interpretation, close on a good day and never identical. So the photo looks confident as a thumbnail, then turns flatter and quieter the instant your editor swaps that embedded preview for its own first render.
The flat version holds more photograph, not less. The highlight detail and shadow depth a baked-in Vivid throws away are still in the NEF, untouched. If you want the camera's look preserved alongside the negative, shoot RAW+JPEG; if you want it as an editable starting point, develop the file in NX Studio, which applies your Picture Control and lets you swap it after the fact.
NEF sizes and the compression menu, decoded
Two settings decide what a NEF weighs: bit depth and compression, and the menu wording matters more than it looks.
Bit depth. Most DSLRs and the first Z bodies record NEF at your choice of 12-bit or 14-bit. 14-bit stores four times the tonal steps, most of them in the shadow range you'll lean on when recovering an underexposed frame. The historical trade was speed — a Z6 shoots 12 fps bursts at 12-bit against 9 fps at 14-bit. Newer bodies have settled the question: the Z8 and Z9 record every NEF at 14-bit.
Compression. The menu has grown across camera generations:

On a 45.7-megapixel Z8, the choice decides how fast you fill cards: Lossless Compressed lands around 55 MB per frame, High Efficiency★ nearer 30–35 MB, and HE smaller again. Nikon rates both High Efficiency flavors as visually matching lossless, and side-by-side tests struggle to split HE★ from it. The caveat sits on the software side. High Efficiency files use a newer compression that older apps don't decode, and macOS has never learned it: Preview and Photos open Lossless Compressed NEFs from these bodies but refuse HE and HE★ outright. Lightroom, Capture One and NX Studio all read them. New body, old software: NEF isn't frozen
Nikon revises NEF with each generation of cameras, so support is a moving target. When a new body ships, Apple has to teach macOS its files before Preview and Photos will open them, and every RAW editor updates its own decoder on its own schedule. The Z8 made the pattern visible: it shipped in May 2023, and macOS only began opening its Lossless Compressed files with the 14.3 update months later — while its High Efficiency files remain outside macOS support to this day.
None of this means your file is broken. A NEF that won't open is a decoder that hasn't met the camera yet, and two outs are dependable while you wait: NX Studio opens every NEF from day one, since Nikon ships it knowing its own cameras, and Adobe's free DNG Converter rewrites the file into a format older software already reads. How to open NEF files on a Mac
macOS ships with RAW support for most Nikon bodies, so the basics are already on your Mac: Preview opens a NEF with a double-click, and Photos imports it. Two caveats. Files from a just-released body can lag until Apple ships a RAW update for that camera — the file is fine; the software hasn't caught up yet. And Preview only shows you one develop of the RAW; it isn't an editor.
To actually develop the file — set your own white balance, recover highlights, work the color — you need a RAW editor.
