The compression flavor is a compatibility decision. Lossless Compressed opens everywhere. High Efficiency NEFs use a newer scheme that mainstream commercial editors now read, but support arrived slowly after launch and remains the thing to verify first in any app not on this list — the open-source world in particular has lagged here. Picture Controls are metadata, not pixels. The Standard or Vivid profile you saw in the viewfinder travels in the NEF as a note. Buy it once, own it, and point it at your after-dark files. DxO's denoising leads this list by a visible margin, and its correction modules are measured per body-and-lens pair, Z glass included. Verify High Efficiency support against your specific version before relying on it — DxO's format support has historically trailed Adobe's by a beat. Organizing tools are thin; many shooters use it as a rescue tool for the frames that matter rather than a daily driver.

darktable and RawTherapee

Free, open source, and genuinely deep — with one Z6 III-specific catch that matters more here than on any other body in this series: High Efficiency NEFs are not reliably supported, because the compression scheme's licensing has kept full open-source support out of reach. Shoot Lossless Compressed and both apps develop Z6 III files happily; shoot High Efficiency and you may be converting files before you can open them. Nikon NX Studio
