How to Edit iPhone ProRAW Photos on a Mac (2026)
You switched on ProRAW because somebody said it makes iPhone photos properly editable. They were right — and now your phone is minting 25 MB files whose best edits will never happen on a six-inch screen.
Short answer: a ProRAW photo is a DNG, a standard RAW file, and a Mac edits it like RAW from any camera. Three parts of the workflow actually matter: getting the real DNG across (two of the obvious routes can silently hand you a JPEG instead), opening it in an app that treats it as RAW, and not panicking when it renders darker on the Mac than it looked on the phone — that has a mechanical explanation and a two-click fix. To pin down what you're really editing, we also opened a genuine ProRAW file next to two ordinary iPhone RAWs and compared them byte by byte. The findings are below.
Set up the iPhone before the shot
ProRAW lives on the Pro models — iPhone 12 Pro through the current 17 Pro and Pro Max; no non-Pro iPhone has the toggle, per Apple's ProRAW documentation. Turn it on under Settings > Camera > Formats: on recent models the section is called Pro Default, where you enable ProRAW & Resolution Control and pick 12MP or 48MP. From then on, the RAW badge in the Camera app switches it per shot.
Two settings decisions are worth making now, not later:
- 12MP or 48MP. The 48-megapixel files — ProRAW Max, roughly 75 MB each against 25 MB at 12MP by Apple's own numbers — only come from the main camera at 1x. Ultra-wide, telephoto, Night mode, flash and macro shots cap at 12MP whatever you choose. 12MP is the default worth living with; step up for shots you know you'll crop or print.
- The ProRAW Format picker (iPhone 16 Pro and later). Newer Pros can compress ProRAW with JPEG-XL inside the DNG: lossless drops a 48MP file to about 45 MB, lossy to about 20 MB. The catch is reader support — macOS 14 or later and current Lightroom handle JPEG-XL DNGs, but Capture One still lists support as an open feature request in 2026, and older tools reject the files outright. If your editor is picky, the JPEG (Most Compatible) option exists for exactly this reason.
One limitation to know: ProRAW doesn't combine with Portrait mode on any iPhone to date. And the capture itself is slower than a normal photo — the developers of the Halide camera app measured about two to three seconds of processing per ProRAW against roughly 50 milliseconds for a plain RAW, with no burst mode. ProRAW is a deliberate format, not a default for everything.
Get the actual DNG onto your Mac
The classic failure in this workflow is arriving at the Mac with a JPEG wearing your photo's name. Each route has a version of the trap:
- AirDrop — fastest for a few frames. Select the photos, share, AirDrop to the Mac. An unedited ProRAW arrives as the DNG, as shot. The trap is edits: a photo you've already adjusted on the phone commonly arrives as a JPEG of the edited version instead. To send the original of an edited shot, either revert it first or tap Options at the top of the share sheet and switch on All Photos Data — a setting that resets on every share, so check it each time it matters.
- Cable — best for a batch. Plug in and import with the Photos app or Image Capture. First, on the iPhone, set Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC to Keep Originals: on Automatic, the phone may convert files for compatibility during transfer, which is precisely what you don't want.
- Out of the Photos library. If your shots sync through iCloud into Photos on the Mac, remember that with Optimize Mac Storage on, the 75 MB originals aren't necessarily on your Mac at all — Photos fetches them when needed, and Apple documents that "Download Originals to this Mac" is the setting that keeps every full-resolution DNG local. To hand a file to another editor, use File > Export > Export Unmodified Original — plain Export produces a processed JPEG or HEIC.
Not sure what actually landed? The file size alone nearly answers it — a real ProRAW is tens of megabytes, a substitute JPEG a few. Why it looks darker on the Mac — and the two-click fix
This is the moment that convinces people their files are broken, so here is what's actually happening. The iPhone's rendering of a ProRAW — its brightness balance, its local contrast — is partly stored as instructions inside the DNG rather than baked into the pixels. We found the mechanism sitting in a real file: a rendering-instructions tag (49 KB of it, called a gain table map) that Apple's apps read and apply automatically, and that other software is free to ignore.
So the same file renders two ways. Open it in Apple's Photos app and it looks like it did on the phone. Open it in an editor that skips or misassigns those instructions and you get the flatter, often darker, un-Apple rendering of the underlying data — a complaint that fills ProRAW threads on Adobe's and Apple's own forums. In Lightroom Classic the fix is two clicks: in the Develop module's Profile menu, choose Apple ProRAW instead of Adobe Color or the generic embedded profile, and the photo snaps back to the iPhone's look — Thomas Fitzgerald's write-up walks through it. And if you prefer the neutral starting point for your own grade, ignoring Apple's look is a legitimate choice, not a malfunction. The point is that it's a choice.
What's still yours to edit — and what the iPhone already decided
ProRAW's honest pitch is a split. Before writing the file, the iPhone shoots a burst, aligns and merges the frames — the Deep Fusion and Smart HDR processing behind its regular shots — cleans up noise and sharpens. All of that is in the pixels and no slider will undo it. What it deliberately leaves open are the decisions photographers actually fight over: white balance, exposure, highlights and shadows, tone and color, stored with 12 bits per channel of latitude to move through.
Critics have a point when they note ProRAW is not RAW in the classic sensor-dump sense — our teardown below shows exactly how right they are — but the merge is also why a phone-sized sensor produces files this clean in dim light. You give up some purity for a head start. If you want the pure version, third-party camera apps capture standard DNGs on any recent iPhone, at the cost of doing the noise work yourself. One caution from the field: a long-running thread on Apple's support forums collects user reports of Night mode ProRAW shots degrading visibly when edited later — the composite falling apart into noise. We couldn't reproduce it on our samples, but the safe habit costs nothing: keep the original and edit non-destructively or work on a copy, which a proper RAW workflow does anyway.
What we found inside a real ProRAW file
Guides in this space describe ProRAW by paraphrasing each other, so we opened the files instead. On September 15, 2026, we took three openly-licensed iPhone DNGs from the raw.pixls.us archive — a genuine ProRAW from an iPhone 12 Pro, plus two ordinary iPhone RAWs (an iPhone XS shot through a third-party camera app and an iPhone 8 shot through the native RAW capture of its era) — and inspected them on a Mac running macOS 27. What the ProRAW had that the ordinary DNGs didn't:
- The image is already assembled. The ProRAW stores three full color channels per pixel at 12 bits — what the DNG spec calls a Linear DNG — the iPhone's multi-frame merge, delivered ready to tone. Both ordinary DNGs store what a camera RAW stores: one unprocessed value per photosite, the classic Bayer mosaic, waiting to be developed. This is the entire ProRAW trade, visible in one metadata field.
- Apple's look travels as instructions. The 49 KB gain-table tag from the section above was right there in the file — the ordinary DNGs have nothing like it, which is why they render the same everywhere and ProRAW doesn't.
- The iPhone's scene analysis ships inside the DNG. Our sample carried a semantic sky mask — a 2016 × 1512 map of where the sky is — embedded alongside the image, machine-readable by any editor that wants it. Not even a separate file; it's in the DNG.
- A full-resolution JPEG preview rides along. We extracted a complete 4032 × 3024 JPEG (5.4 MB) from inside the ProRAW. The XS file's preview was a 852 × 640 thumbnail; the iPhone 8 file had none. It's a big reason ProRAW thumbnails feel instant despite the file sizes.
- macOS read all three natively. Every file — ProRAW or not — decoded cleanly with the Mac's built-in RAW machinery, no extra software. Apple's supported-cameras list doesn't mention iPhones because it doesn't need to; iPhone DNGs are handled natively.
- A spec footnote for the curious: our launch-era file declares itself DNG version 1.4 while already carrying the gain-table tag that the DNG 1.6 specification later standardized — Apple shipped the future a little early.
Honest scope note: no openly-licensed 48MP ProRAW Max sample exists in the public archives yet, so the teardown covers the 12MP generation; Apple's own documentation carries the 48MP numbers above.
Editing it in practice
Once the DNG is on the Mac, you have three doors, and they're honestly different:
- Apple's Photos app — free, already installed, applies Apple's look automatically, and its adjustments work on the full RAW data. The control set is the limit: fine for exposure and color moves, shallow for serious highlight rescue, local work or a real grade.
- Lightroom or Capture One — the deepest control sets in the business, with the profile fix from above in Lightroom's case, a subscription in both cases for most users, and the JPEG-XL caveat in Capture One's.

Storage sanity with files this size
The arithmetic sneaks up on people: at Apple's cited sizes, a thousand 12MP ProRAWs is ~25 GB, and the same thousand at 48MP is ~75 GB — an order of magnitude past a HEIC library. Three habits keep it sane: shoot ProRAW deliberately (the RAW badge is per-shot for a reason) rather than as the default for receipts and dog photos; use the JPEG-XL lossless option if everything in your workflow reads it; and get the keepers onto the Mac and into your backup instead of letting the phone be the archive. The files are big because they're holding latitude for you — spend it on photographs that deserve an edit.
