How to Get the Film Look from Fujifilm RAW (2026)

Fujifilm shooters start closer to film than anyone else. The company spent decades manufacturing the stocks, then built its film simulations from them, so Classic Chrome or Nostalgic Neg. carries you a long way before you touch a slider. A simulation is a starting point, though, not a finished grade, and in a RAW file it survives only as a metadata note. To finish the look in any editor: lift the black point so shadows fade, pull a shoulder into the tone curve so highlights roll off the way negative film does, steer color toward your target stock, and add fine grain. The head start: film simulations

Current X and GFX bodies carry up to 20 simulations depending on the model, and the core lineup reads like Fujifilm's own back catalog. Provia, Velvia and Astia were real slide films. Classic Neg. channels Superia, the drugstore color negative, and Reala Ace, the newest addition, revives the Reala name. Shoot JPEG and the simulation bakes in. Shoot RAW and it rides along as a note in the .RAF's metadata while the sensor data underneath stays neutral. Two renderers reproduce a simulation exactly: the camera's own processor, and Fujifilm's free X RAW Studio, which routes the file back through a camera connected over USB. Lightroom and Capture One ship camera-matching profiles that approximate each simulation, and they get close, but side-by-side threads comparing them run for pages. The recipe community treats simulations as raw material. Fuji X Weekly alone catalogs hundreds of "film simulation recipes": a simulation plus white balance shift, highlight and shadow tone, and grain, combined to imitate a specific stock in camera. Every recipe is an argument that a bare simulation isn't the finished look. The same layering works after the fact in a RAW editor, with more range and an undo history.

The manual moves, with starting values

Work from a RAF, not a JPEG: you are about to compress highlights and lift shadows, which is exactly the headroom a JPEG has already spent (what a RAF stores). These moves work in any RAW editor, on the neutral file or stacked on a camera-matching profile.

  1. Fade the blacks. On the tone curve, raise the bottom-left point straight up until pure black lands around 5 to 10 percent gray. A faded-blacks slider, if your editor has one, does the same job with one control at a low setting. Shadows should keep detail and read charcoal, never void.
  2. Roll off the highlights. Drag the top-right point of the curve down a few percent, then lift the three-quarter tones back up to keep midtone contrast alive. Highlights now compress into white the way negative film's shoulder behaves, and skies stop clipping to paper.
  3. Grade in two directions. Push the highlight color a touch warm and the shadow color a touch cool. Keep both nudges small enough that neither reads on its own; the quiet opposition between them is what registers as a film palette.
  4. Add grain last, and keep it fine. X-Trans sensors render fine detail differently than Bayer sensors do, and heavy grain over foliage or fabric turns texture to mush. Start around 15 to 20 on a 100-point amount slider at the smallest size, then judge at export dimensions: grain that reads at 40 megapixels can vanish at Instagram's 1080 pixels.

Portra-style warm neutral

Kodak Portra is the look half the recipe community chases, and Fujifilm ships nothing named for it. To build it: warm the temperature a few hundred kelvin past neutral, drop global saturation about 10 points, then use HSL to raise the orange band back up so skin stays alive inside the muted frame. Keep the faded blacks and soft shoulder from above, since Portra is a negative film and wears both. Nostalgic Neg. or Classic Neg. is the nearest in-camera starting point.

Velvia-style saturated slide

Velvia is the opposite temperament, and here the faded-blacks move is wrong. Slide film holds dense blacks and punchy contrast, so skip step one, add contrast instead, and push saturation up 10 to 20 points with extra weight on greens and blues through HSL. Fujifilm's own Velvia profile is the obvious base if your editor offers it. Save this look for landscapes; on skin it reads as sunburn.

When a preset is the better call

Building the grade by hand is worth doing until you can predict what each slider will do, and a time sink after that.
