Modern bodies write CR3 in two flavors — RAW, and C-RAW at nearly half the size. Both open everywhere current; the choice is about disk space against a small latitude penalty in extreme recovery.

What to know before your first edit
Two Canon-specific things surprise people. First, Picture Styles are metadata: the Standard or Portrait look you saw on the camera's screen is stored in the CR3 as a note, and only Canon's own Digital Photo Professional renders it — every other editor, ours included, starts from the neutral sensor data. Second, the kit lenses expect software corrections: RF-S zooms in particular are designed to be fixed in the recipe rather than the glass, so an editor applying proper profiles matters more than it did in the DSLR era.

Does RevelRaw render Canon Picture Styles?
No — and neither does any editor except Canon's DPP. The style is metadata; third-party editors start from the neutral sensor data.
What's the difference between RAW and C-RAW?
Both are CR3 files. C-RAW is nearly half the size with a penalty you'll only meet in extreme shadow recovery. Anything current reads both.
Why won't my Canon RAW file open on my Mac?
A just-released body can wait months for Apple's RAW support. Canon's free DPP reads every CR3 today, and old CRW archives usually open after a one-time pass through Adobe's free DNG Converter.
