RAW Files Won't Open on a Mac: Find the Cause in Six Checks (2026)

Apple's list of supported cameras for macOS 27, dated September 22, 2026, promises "system-level support for RAW images taken by many third-party cameras", by model, not brand. So the question is which camera, which mode, on which macOS, and whether that macOS changed last week.

The order comes from 26 "RAW won't open" threads from 2023 to 2026 on Apple Community, MacRumors, Lightroom Queen and Adobe's forums. Eleven were about an update bug, where a macOS update breaks files that opened before; several describe the same bug. Seven were about a too-new camera, five a capture mode, four a transfer or cloud problem, four a file that wasn't a camera RAW, and two the RAW+JPEG pair in Photos. Some threads fit more than one cause. That's our reading of 26 forum threads, not a market statistic. Update bugs come first because in the 2025–2026 threads we reviewed, a macOS update came up more often than a too-new camera.

How we tested

On September 27, 2026, we downloaded 21 public-domain (CC0) RAW files, about 940 MB, from the raw.pixls.us archive and verified their checksums. We ran them on macOS 27.0 (build 26A428) on an Apple Silicon Mac. Besides new bodies and compression modes, the set includes a Sigma X3F and a Phase One IIQ from an unlisted body, and two older bodies as a baseline.

For each file, exiftool 13.55, a free metadata reader, read the capture mode, and the Mac's image command, sips, decoded it with the same decoder Preview uses. We also asked Quick Look for thumbnails from Terminal. "Decodes" means a full-size render at the RAW's own dimensions, never the embedded preview passed through.

Eighteen of 21 decoded at full resolution. On macOS 27.0, every Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm and Sony compression setting we tried decoded. The Sony a7 V's compressed ARWs decoded too, although Apple's page footnotes that body "Lossless compressed format only".

On macOS 27.0, whenever the decoder couldn't read a RAW in our test, Quick Look showed no thumbnail; it didn't fall back to the embedded JPEG. For the Sigma X3F, the unlisted Phase One IIQ and the OM System High Res Shot file, it returned nothing at 256 or 2048 pixels within 120 seconds, or in a 600-second retry. Two of the three carry an embedded JPEG.

Limits:

• We tested from Terminal, not in Preview or Photos; what those apps show comes from user reports.
• The X-H2 was the only Fujifilm body.
• The R6 Mark III files were crop-size samples.
• Not tested: Pentax K-1 pixel shift and the Phase One IQ3 100M, the other footnoted cases on Apple's list.

The six causes, in the order to check them

1. RAW files stopped opening after a macOS update

The tell: files that opened last week stopped after a system update, on a camera your Mac has supported for years. Fix: install the next update when it ships, and reboot when Finder stalls. Meanwhile, our free in-browser EXIF viewer extracts the embedded previews without uploading anything.

RAW decoding lives inside macOS, so an update can break it and a later one fix it. The current case is macOS Sequoia 15.8, released September 14, 2026, per Apple's release list. Quick Look and thumbnails hang on RAW files, Finder slows to a crawl, and cards won't eject. Threads on Lightroom Queen and MacRumors from the week of September 16 confirm it for CR2, CR3, NEF and DNG. Reported workarounds: reboot, or rename the files. Macs on macOS 26 or 27 aren't affected.

As of September 27, 2026, 15.8.1 is a release candidate, not a release. One Lightroom Queen poster wrote on September 20 that "reports are that it does not fix Apple RAW".

It has happened before. macOS 15.4 (March 31, 2025) turned Canon CR3, Nikon NEF and some Sony ARW files black in Quick Look and often in thumbnails until 15.5 (May 12, 2025), which most users report fixed it. Sonoma 14.5 to 14.6.1 broke Canon EOS R3 files in Preview; they worked again by August 19, 2024. Ventura 13.3 gave DJI drone DNGs colored stripes until 13.4 in May 2023.

2. Only some files from the camera fail: a capture mode or compression setting

The tell: most frames open and a few don't, and the few share a special mode or RAW setting. Fix: if you can't update macOS, shoot single frames, and on Sequoia or older switch to Nikon Lossless or Fujifilm Uncompressed, for the rest of the shoot.

On macOS 27.0, every Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm and Sony compression setting we tried decoded. In RevelRaw's September 2026 test on macOS 27.0, Nikon Z 9 High Efficiency NEFs, Sony a7 V compressed ARWs, Canon C-RAW and Fujifilm X-H2 lossy RAFs all decoded at full resolution. Apple's Sequoia list (July 15, 2025) footnotes 28 Fujifilm bodies, the X-H2 among them, "Uncompressed RAW format only" and six Nikon Z bodies "Lossless RAW format only". The macOS 26 and 27 lists drop both footnotes.

An Apple Community thread from December 2023 about a Canon EOS R8 on Ventura resolved to cRAW files not opening while standard RAW did. Another, from May 21, 2023, found Ventura 13.4 unable to preview Z9 High Efficiency files. On Sequoia or older, a failing Nikon HE or Fujifilm compressed file is explained by its mode; on 26 or 27, look elsewhere. Our NEF, RAF, CR3 and ARW guides go deeper.

Apple lists cameras, but it decodes files. On macOS 27, the kind that still fails is the multi-shot composite. Apple's macOS 27 list footnotes seven Olympus and OM System bodies "Excluding RAW images taken using High Res Shot". In our test, the OM-5 Mark II's High Res Shot file rendered nothing, while an ordinary ORF from the same camera opened. The list also marks the Pentax K-1 "Single shot RAW format only". 3. Every file from this camera fails: the camera is newer than your macOS

The tell: nothing from this body has ever opened on this Mac, thumbnails included, while older cameras' files open fine. Fix: update to the newest macOS your Mac supports and check again.

Since 2016, new cameras have arrived inside macOS updates; the last standalone Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update was version 6.21, for OS X El Capitan. A Mac that can't run current macOS may never get your new body. Image Capture uses the same decoder, so another Apple app won't help.

To check, open System Information and choose Software, then Raw Support: it lists the cameras this macOS supports. In Terminal, the first command below prints the same list. The second test-decodes one file (replace FILE with its path).

A JPEG on your Desktop at the RAW's full dimensions means the decoder can read the file; "Cannot extract image from file" means it can't.

The two lists disagree. On macOS 27.0, system_profiler SPRawCameraDataType lists 927 entries and Apple's macOS 27 page 805 (our count, September 27, 2026); only 643 names match word for word. The Mac's list adds 101 iPhone and iPad entries and spells some names differently: "Sony Alpha ILCE-7M4" for the web's "Sony Alpha 7 IV". The Hasselblad CFV 100C is on Apple's page but not on this Mac's list, and it decoded anyway. Two of our files were on neither list and decoded too: a Sony UMC-R10C and a DJI FC9287 drone DNG. Search for the bare model number, and treat a missing entry as a hint, not a verdict.

Apple's web lists grow with each macOS: 672 entries for Ventura, 695 for Sonoma, 730 for Sequoia and 805 for macOS 26 and macOS 27 (counted September 27, 2026). The 26 and 27 pages, both dated September 22, 2026, carry the same cameras, so upgrading from 26 to 27 adds none as of that date. Apple later adds cameras to older pages, so a page's date isn't when support arrived.

The Nikon Z6III, announced June 17, 2024, was still missing for an owner on macOS 14.6 in an Apple Community thread from April 28, 2025, while a reply found it under Raw Support on macOS 15.4.1. A September 2024 report says Lossless files already opened in Photos, matching Sequoia's lossless-only footnote. A missing body under a year old is normal; the RW2 and CR3 guides cover the wait for new bodies.

4. One file fails while its neighbors open: an incomplete or cloud-only copy

The tell: one file, or a run at the end of a card, fails while its neighbors open. Or the file sits in a cloud folder with a download icon. Fix: copy it again from the card, or download the placeholder. Don't format a card until the shoot opens on the Mac.

A yanked cable, a dropped reader or a card pulled mid-write leaves an incomplete file. SD cards of 64 GB and up use exFAT, which has no crash protection, so a sudden disconnect can do more damage than on the Mac's own drive. Cloud services like iCloud Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive show online-only placeholders that Quick Look can't preview until they download.

The 30-second test is our free in-browser EXIF viewer. If nothing parses while neighbors from the same card read fine, the copy is incomplete. If the metadata and preview read, the preview is recoverable, but that alone doesn't prove the RAW is whole. We cut copies of two files to 60% and 25% of their bytes to simulate an interrupted copy. The truncated Canon EOS 5D CR2 showed nothing on the Mac, yet its full 2496 × 1664 embedded preview extracted intact.

A truncated RAW can look whole in Quick Look. The truncated Nikon Z 9 lossless NEF was sneakier: the Mac's decoder reported success at the full 8256 × 5504, but the missing part rendered black, about the bottom 45% at a 60% cut. The Quick Look thumbnail looked complete, because it came from the intact full-size JPEG inside the file. And exiftool warned "StripOffsets+StripByteCounts runs past end of file", meaning the image data stops early. So open a suspect file at full size, or check exiftool for that warning. A good-looking thumbnail is not proof of a whole file.

5. It isn't the camera RAW your Mac expects

The tell: the file is a DNG from a phone, drone or converter, or its format or camera isn't on Apple's list. Fix: for a phone DNG, update macOS or change the phone's ProRAW format; otherwise, open the file in the software that made it.

Phone DNGs: since the iPhone 16 Pro, ProRAW offers JPEG Lossless (Most Compatible), JPEG-XL Lossless and JPEG-XL Lossy (MacRumors, September 20, 2024). The JPEG XL options need macOS 14 Sonoma or later; see our ProRAW page and DNG guide.

Converted DNGs: Apple's list promises only "basic support for RAW files in DNG (Digital Negative) format when captured by these and other cameras". A DNG that Lightroom wrapped around a JPEG, TIFF or scan isn't a captured RAW, and user reports since 2023 say macOS can fail to render those. The camera-original DJI drone DNG in our test opened at full size.

Unlisted formats and bodies: Sigma's X3F, which none of Apple's lists carries, and an IIQ from a Phase One iXU-RS1000, a body missing from Apple's list, rendered nothing on macOS 27.0, with no thumbnail. On the Mac, that looks just like the truncated CR2 in cause 4.

6. Photos shows the JPEG or refuses the import

The tell: the file opens in Preview, but Photos shows a JPEG, refuses the import, or keeps an old look after an update. Fix: for a RAW+JPEG pair, open the photo, click Edit, then choose Image, then Use RAW as Original.

Three Photos behaviors read as "won't open" and aren't. Photos imports a RAW+JPEG pair as one photo and, in Apple's words, "uses the JPEG file as the original". After a macOS update that improves the decoder, older imports keep their old rendering until you choose Image, then Reprocess RAW; Apple's guide warns that you "can't undo this change".

With Optimize Mac Storage on, Apple says the Mac shows "optimized JPEG versions of your RAW images" while the RAW files stay in iCloud Photos; the RAW downloads when you edit the photo. An import can also fail with a message like "the item cannot be added to your Photo library". That means Photos couldn't read the file; the message isn't specific to RAW, so run the checks above before importing again.

The fixes, once you know the cause

Update macOS, or wait for the next one. System Settings, then General, then Software Update shows what's pending. If thumbnails stay blank after a fix, run qlmanage -r cache in Terminal to reset the thumbnail cache (plain -r leaves the cache alone).

Change what the camera writes, for now. Shoot RAW+JPEG so every frame has a viewable twin.

Point the file at the right app. If double-clicking opens the wrong app, select the file, press Cmd-I, choose Preview under Open with, then Change All.

Use the maker's free app for the frames you already have. None is a pleasure to edit in, but each gets a TIFF or JPEG out of a file the Mac can't read:

• Nikon: NX Studio.
• Canon: Digital Photo Professional (it may ask for your camera's serial number).
• Sony: Imaging Edge Desktop.
• Fujifilm: X RAW Studio (with the camera connected over USB) or RAW FILE CONVERTER EX.
• Olympus and OM System: OM Workspace.
• Panasonic LUMIX: SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE.

Convert to DNG. Adobe DNG Converter 18.6 (August 2026) is free for macOS 13 or later, and Adobe often adds a new camera before Apple does. A DNG from an unsupported body may then open in Preview and Photos (we didn't test a converted file).

Or edit it in a dedicated RAW editor. An editor gives you the controls the file exists for. RevelRaw is our native macOS editor, and nothing leaves your Mac. FAQ

Why won't my Mac open my RAW files?

It's almost never a broken file. Finder, Quick Look, Preview and Photos share one RAW decoder in macOS, and it knows camera models and capture modes, not brands. The usual causes are an update bug, a capture mode, a too-new camera, an incomplete copy, a file that isn't a camera RAW, or Photos showing the JPEG.

Why does Preview say it doesn't support this RAW file format?

It means the Mac's RAW decoder doesn't know that camera, or the mode the file was shot in. Only some frames failing points to a capture mode (cause 2); every frame failing points to a camera newer than your macOS (cause 3).

Why are my RAW files not showing thumbnails in Finder?

Quick Look produced no thumbnail in our macOS 27 test when the Mac's RAW decoder failed, and a normal thumbnail does not prove the file is whole. Blank icons for one camera mean an unsupported body or mode; one blank file among working neighbors means a bad copy. On Sequoia 15.8, hanging thumbnails are the September 2026 bug.

How do I check which cameras my Mac supports for RAW?

Open System Information and choose Software, then Raw Support, or run system_profiler SPRawCameraDataType in Terminal. Apple's web list for your macOS version spells some cameras differently. Search both for the model number, and treat a missing entry as a hint, not a verdict.

Does updating macOS fix RAW support?

Often, since new cameras arrive inside macOS updates. But the macOS 26 and 27 camera lists were identical on September 22, 2026, and an update can also break decoding for a while.

Why did my RAW files stop working after a macOS update?

By design: Photos imports the pair as one photo and, in Apple's words, "uses the JPEG file as the original". Open the photo, click Edit, then choose Image, then Use RAW as Original.

Can I convert RAW to DNG to make it open on Mac?

Often. Adobe DNG Converter is free, runs on macOS 13 or later, and frequently supports a new camera before Apple does. macOS may then open the DNG under its basic DNG support, though we didn't test a converted file.
